Changing Lives for offenders with a Stonemasonry Programme at HMP Rochester

Stonemasonry has been taught at HMP Rochester since 2012, providing serving offenders the opportunity to learn a trade and enhance their employment prospects on release. Learners have been achieving Level 2 Diploma in Stonemasonry-Banker (Construction), gaining life time skills and sustainable employment.

In 2017, Jonathan was employed by Construct A Future to deliver this valuable vocational training opportunity for up to 12 learners in the prison and five learners in our community workshop adjacent to the prison.

Our objective is to offer a world class programme that will provide the construction industry with skilled craftsman to build, repair and maintain our nation heritage and other prestigious buildings. Our aim is of offer training to reduce re-offending by providing life time skills that lead to long term employment which will in turn address the skill shortage in the heritage sector.

Would you like to own your own unique hand carved commission?

Our learners produce commissioned work for the general public and companies.  This service allows the mason to gain experience of stonemasonry and understand the importance of working to a deadline.

Construct A Future working in partnership with HMP Rochester provide this valuable opportunity and fund it through the returns on their enterprises and sale of commissioned work.

We are also supported by Portland Stone Firms Limited who provide stone for our learners and have recently been given some stone from the V & A Museum. We also owe a debt of thanks to Wates Family Enterprise Trust that has provided much needed funding to bridge the gap in our enterprise returns and costs of delivering this programme.

We welcome any funding and support
